Any reports for the Roaring River area (Rock Lakes, Serene Lake)? My past experience up there has been that they're awful in July and very tolerable by around August, but I know the snow melted a lot later this year.

Does anyone have an recent info on the bugs situation in the central Cascades? Will be heading out for some hiking/backpacking over the next few weeks. Would really appreciate any info you have.

Many thanks.

Bald Mountain area is full of biting flies (July 22nd) - damn things like deet. At least the mosquitoes leave you alone if you smell like chemicals.

Indian Heaven 07/23/17

Thomas Lake TH - Rock lake -Bear Lake - Lemei Lake - Junction lake loop.

Billions upon billions of mosquitoes everywhere along the 11 mile loop. I used more deet in one day than I have in the previous 5 years total.

Yes, I was told that Indian Heaven is bad by the standards of Indian Heaven, an epic mosquito year there at the moment.

I called a Deschutes NF Ranger Station today to ask about the Diamond Peak Wilderness and she went into detail about how the mosquitoes and very thick and hungry this year and "the bees, they are huge!"

I am hoping to do Diamond Peak Loop Wed-Fri next week.

I find it helpful to call the Ranger Station near where you are going. They usually have up to date information, even if just general in nature.

We hiked from Top Spur to McNeil Point on Saturday, July 22 and it was VERY buggy. Some mosquitoes, but mostly black flies.

Glad to hear it isn't just me they like so much. I had the place to myself for a little bit yesterday, but it did me no good since any time I stopped moving I was *covered* in flies. They were happily flying around in the DEET as I was spraying it. I'm not usually bothered by bugs and don't typically even use repellent, but that was just unpleasant.

Yep! Ditto that. Only recourse was to just keep moving!

(3.1 moving average to the shelter. <huff> <puff> <omg!>)

The breeze above timberline was sublime.

Decided to scurry up Bald Mountain on the way down.
