Painted Hills - Flower Time?

Post by Guy » April 10th, 2017, 2:35 pm

A few years ago someone here posted some fantastic photos of the Painted Hills with yellow flowers growing in all the water draws of the hills. The image below isn't one one of them but shows the same thing:

Anyway does anyone know what time of year this happens?

Thanks.

I cant say exactly when,

but I was just in the area last weekend hiking XC and while there was no huge flower show the desert was green and small purple desert flowers were blooming. I suspect the actual full 'bloom' to be coming soon.

Ah, sorry, just seeing this. It always happens the first week of May, from our experience and seeing others' images. Saw some pics from last week appears to be peak for all of the Golden Bee Plants and John Day Pincushions at the Painted Hills.

I was there last week, and the ranger at the visitor center on Highway 19 told me that heavy rains this past winter had eliminated the colored gullies for the time being.

But the cleome and chaenactis was looking pretty good in the places where it's still rooted.
