Official 2017 Snow Level Thread
Re: Official 2017 Snow Level Thread
Thanks for the info. Spend a lot of time in the Badger and I am thrilled to hear about 4420 being improved. I much prefer going that way than jarring my brain on the washboardy 4410 (our rig is not conducive to a smooth ride).

The Cast Creek trail approach to East Zigzag Mt. is entirely snow free as of 6/29. Very few bugs, either, but there were a few skeeters and flies.

Snow level mid-4000s on west side of Adams (PCT and Riley Trail).
Re: Official 2017 Snow Level Thread
On the PCT it's that low huh?? Thought it would be much higher there due to the burn.drm wrote:Snow level mid-4000s on west side of Adams (PCT and Riley Trail).

In that area, only the upper part of the PCT is in burn, so I wouldn't be surprised if after wallowing through some snow, you reached dry ground, maybe above 5000 feet.-Q- wrote:On the PCT it's that low huh?? Thanks so much for the update. Its been a few years since I hiked that route. Guess I forgot exactly where the burn starteddrm wrote:In that area, only the upper part of the PCT is in burn, so I wouldn't be surprised if after wallowing through some snow, you reached dry ground, maybe above 5000 feet.-Q- wrote:On the PCT it's that low huh?? Snow on PCT/Timberline trail below Paradise Park. Above about 5000 feet. There were people doing the loop - Paradise Loop Trail and PCT/Timberline. I lost trail on occasion but had GPS track to refer to. If it was cold, especially early morning in Paradise Park where it's open, there would be icy slopes difficult without traction devices, like one morning, but I did the trail down below which was okay.

Re: Official 2017 Snow Level Thread
weird how the weather has just switched from June 17
10 months before June 17 it rained all the time
10 day forecast says no rain, so we should have 30 days without measurable rain. We might break the 71 day record.
My last two trips I camped without tent for 12 nights. For 10 months before I never had a stretch of more than a day or two.

Hiked up Tipsoo Peak today to check-out snow levels on the PCT through the Mount Thielsen Wilderness. Everything is melted out up to about 7,000 feet - above that it's all snow: 2-5 feet in the trees, less on the exposed ridges, only the highest, rockiest points are snow-free. Saw ski tracks on the PCT alignment but I'm guessing a few weeks before the trail itself is visible. And LOTS of mosquitos below the snow line!!!!

I can imagine. The worst mosquitos I've ever seen in Oregon were a few miles north of Tipsoo Peak at Maidu Lake. It was mid-July, not long after the snow melted.
