your highest camp
Re: your highest camp
Climbed Nevado Huascaran del Sur in the 1980s. Last camp before the summit was at 5850m (~19,200 feet) at the W end of Garganta. Can't post a picture since this was before digital cameras (or even smart phones!) and I have yet to scan any of the slides.

Water, good eye! I had a hard time reconciling Don's pics with my memory, but thought maybe things looked different because my two trips were snowy. And you're right, West Rib bivy sites are rare: one just after gaining the rib, near the prominent spire, and a little ledge higher up that's big enough for a micro tent. After that, you pretty much have to dig/stomp a spot to hunker down.

In Oregon, about 100' from the summit of Mt. Hood.

Oh...I can't be the only one wondering about that. Where, exactly? And why not on the summit? Maybe I'll do that someday. It's an easy enough route that one could conceivably travel on the luxury plan. I like the idea of making a fancy breakfast of omelettes and waffles on the top of Oregon.viking wrote:In Oregon, about 100' from the summit of Mt. Hood.

Y'know, we were rather self-righteously proud to claim the title "Highest People in Oregon!" (for at least some portion of) the other night. Which is sorta saying something, for this region, eh? Don't want to hear there are people getting even higher than we were.Chip Down wrote:Oh...I can't be the only one wondering about that. Where, exactly? And why not on the summit? So much for the old adage: "Climb high, sleep low"
