In a way, it's even worse. Imagine if ATV enthusiasts were somehow convinced they're doing the right thing, even though they've never paused for a moment to question why they do it.

Perhaps it's an artistic statement, like rock stacking.

I'll risk the wrath of rock stacking haters by saying rock stacking is harmless, but dog poop in plastic bags isn't....

Ducking for cover now but not changing my opinion :)

I'd argue dog poo in sacks is pretty harmless too, but it is gross

and putting poo in bag and then leaving bag next to trail is illogical - better to just flick poo off trail where no one will step on it - it's like people didn't "get the message" they're supposed to carry it out

Ok, I'll argue. Do you mean harmless as in....leaving a cigarette butt, a water bottle, or a beer can on the side of the trail? Do you think it's harmless because someone else will pick it up?

BTW Jerry, "harmless" littering on a highway carries a fine.

I'm not advocating that people do any of those

Plastic bags on the side of the trail won't hurt the environment. Same with that other trash. It's just obnoxious. Aesthetic.

Developing wild land - reducing habitat - will hurt the environment

Polluting the air or water will hurt the environment

Over fishing will hurt the environment

Having too many children will hurt the environment

Maybe WS and I should learn not to hit the "submit" button :)

I've considered this, and I think it's the most likely explanation... but they're still assholes.
Agreed. ;)

I dunno

I suspect some people think it's a benefit to put poo in bag and leave it next to trail, as opposed to leaving poo where it lies.

Too many bags to just attribute to people forgetting them.

It's like voting for Trump. No one wants to admit it to a pollster. (Who can blame them!) Same deal with cleaning up after your dog. People do/say as they feel others expect, when they may get "caught." But as soon as no one's looking...
