2017 Solar Eclipse Umbra Path - GPX File

Post by aiwetir » January 8th, 2017, 1:14 pm

I know there's a thread on the eclipse already but I thought having a separate thread may help search engines find this easier. Mod can merge with that thread if they think otherwise.

Here's a GPX file of the 2017 eclipse umbra path. I couldn't find one so I made one from this source https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4518
The GPX is linked below

It would be optimum to find a spot where you can see good both the East and West, so you can see the shadow coming your way, and leaving.

I think if you took the PCT North from Santiam Pass there are places where you're on the ridge, the cascade crest, that would fit the bill.

I wonder if there are any places in the valley, like near Salem. Looking around a little, I didn't see any good hills.

There must be good places in the coast range.

I was just checking this out, and where highway 197 ends at highway 97, North of Madras, it's pretty good. Convenient. There's a rest area that's a little south of there.

Many thanks for this Michael!

It's going to be a zoo on the day wherever we go I think! My plan right now is to drive out to the Madras area on the Sunday then car camp somewhere hopefully on a minor road with good views and get my space for the morning.
hiking log & photos.

The Criterion tract is just west of Criterion summit on 197. There's a parking area. You can hike west from there and camp out. May be some high points to view eclipse from.

Another place would be Ochoco Summit on highway 26. Maybe some peak in Mill Creel Wilderness or Ochoco mountains

A wonderfully useful KMZ file comes from http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/So ... Earth.html

I was gonna do a KMZ but saw they existed already, thought people could make their own from a GPX, and none that I had found would convert properly for me.

That particular KMZ is great though, it's got a great data table associated with it that has times as well as a ton of data. I'm curious how and if it renders fully and properly on any mobile app?

The eclipse occurs at about 17:15 UT

is that 10:15 AM Pacific Daylight Time?

it would be a shame to show up then and find out it was an hour earlier
