Southern Oregon hikes missing from 'Find a Hike' dropdown

Post by sprengers4jc » April 20th, 2016, 11:23 am

Hello, I logged in today to do some research on hikes in Southern Oregon for an upcoming trip. I knew VanMarmot had added quite a few entries for that part of the site. But it does not show on the dropdown menu:

One must go to this page to find a link instead:

Once there, everything works great and there are many choices. But if there is a way to add it to the dropdown menu, it would allow people easier access to those hikes.

Thanks,
Keri

It looks like the drop-down is arranged by type of hike, while the index is arranged by location. These seem complimentary.

I've never used the drop down menu before and it probably hasn't changed since, maybe, 2007! (I just use the index map on the Field Guide page).

We're considering a new look for the Field Guide index page in the coming year and we should update the drop down menu as well.

I don't have access to change the drop down menu, but two sections need to be updated.

In the Area section, with all the added subareas in recent years, it could look like this:

Portland Area
City of Portland
Sauvie Island
Gresham Area
Clackamas County
Washington County
Willamette Valley
Oregon Coast
North Oregon Coast
Northern Coast Range
Central Oregon Coast
Central Coast Range
Washington Coast
South Washington Coast
Olympic Peninsula
Southwest Washington
Columbia River Floodplain
Yacolt Burn
Wind River Area
Lewis River Area
Mount St. Helens
Indian Heaven Wilderness
White Salmon River Area
Mount Adams
Goat Rocks Wilderness
Mount Rainier Area
Columbia River Gorge
Cape Horn Area
Crown Point Area
Multnomah Falls Area
Beacon Rock Area
Eagle Creek Area
Waucoma Ridge Area
Starvation Creek Area
Dog Mountain Area
Rowena Area
Catherine Creek Area
Mount Hood
Waucoma Ridge Area
Lost Lake Area
Zigzag Mountain Area
Salmon River Area
Mount Hood Area
Barlow Area
Lookout Mountain Area
Clackamas River Area
Molalla River Area
Central Oregon
Bull of the Woods Wilderness
Rhododendron Ridge Area
Olallie Lake Scenic Area
North Santiam Drainage
Opal Creek Wilderness and Scenic Area
Detroit Area
Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Area
South Santiam Drainage
Santiam Pass
Three Sisters Area
Cottage Grove Area
Southern Oregon
Southern Cascades
Klamath Mountains
Northern California
Eastern Oregon
Columbia Plateau
Deschutes and Crooked River Canyon Country
Bend Area
Ochoco Mountains
Central Blue Mountains
Wallowa Mountains
Great Basin

OR (to make it simple), it could be just the main areas (listed in bold) - I've separated Willamette Valley from Portland even though it is listed on that page for the time being.

Also, the following hike types should be added to the Options menu:

Beach Hikes
Hike and Bike
Rails to Trails
Universal Access Hikes

I can make those changes- do you think it would be better to just have the bolded areas or all? I'm not sure how much value there is in searching the narrower areas, but there probably is some.

I'd go for just the bold areas - I think the narrow areas will keep changing to some extent.

I'd add it might also be a good idea also to have a link to the Field Guide index page on the Find a Hike page.

It's now set up to match the bolded areas.
