What's this spider?

Post by BurnsideBob » August 13th, 2015, 3:57 pm

This spider is in my garden on my basil. That object below the spider is a honeybee it caught--leg tip to leg tip this spider is 3" across. Anyone know anything about them?

I keep making protein shakes but they always turn out like margaritas.

What a cool looking spider... curiosity got me so I did some digging and Google tells me its a Corn Spider.

The zig zag pattern in the web in your photo helps confirm that in the Wikipedia entry for Corn Spiders...

Koda, thanks for ID'ing my friend. If she grows much bigger I'll post a follow up photo!

I dunno, I like corn a lot more than I like wasps. Ice cream spider would also be a cool name. "Wasp Spider" sounds like a Sci-Fi Original.

They're more commonly known as garden spiders (Argiope aurantia). There's one under my front porch step that has a 1" body and is at least 3" across.
