I have no idea but I literally LOLed at your description . If I had to guess, I'd say sick critter. But I have seen some weird, vomituous-looking fungus on trees before, like this specimen on Multnomah Basin Road near the cut-off trail to Devil's Rest.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward sick critter, too. You can see some "splatter" on the snow toward the bottom of the picture. But I sure did a double take when I stepped across it.

That is some freaky looking stuff. I would have given it a wide berth. Think "The Thing".

I've seen a lot of pretty freaky fungus meltdowns, too. Seems we had more than a few names for these guys seen last fall up on the north side of MSH:

Officially known as dog vomit slime mold (Fuligo septica). Look it up!
But texasbb's is in the wrong place for dvsm (on the ground); I'd hazard - coyote diarrhea?

What ever it is that Texasbb saw I have seen similar several times. Personally as to what it is I am clueless, but it has always appeared too liquidly and variable in texture for me to think that it is a mold. My best guess is that a coyote overate and urped up some half digested whatever... In the name of science I guess that someone could bend down and smell it, that might tell you which end of and animal it came from....

I'd do that.viking wrote: In the name of science I guess that someone could bend down and smell it, that might tell you which end of and animal it came from....
Right after I saw you do it first.

After working at a vet clinic for 22 years I have seen countless bodily functions and even had to investigate the contents. I can tell you that this did not come from the mouth. Probably a coyote that ate something it shouldn't with a resulting gastro-intestinal upset.
