Cool. Guess I never realized that the lodge was built after Benson Bridge. Looks like a lot of landscape was removed to build the lodge too.

Great find. It's interesting to see the falls without the lodge. I would love to see a similar photo of the log bridge (circa 1910). I have a few vintage postcards of the log bridge, but have yet to see a quality photo of the same.

Benson Bridge built in 1914, the first incarnation of the lodge was in 1925, I believe. There's a cool schematic done as part of a USDOT project in the 1990s that shows the expanding footprint of the lodge over the years -- the original version was roughly half the footprint of what we see today (and built by the City of Portland, as I recall).

It's interesting to note that in the 1880's the 'pre' Benson Bridge was a wooden structure called a 'bowstring truss bridge'.
