Strange that areas that did not burn are closed, while the the area near the Columbia and Eagle Creek gorge is not included in that closure zone.

This closure order is just for the Hood River Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest. The area within the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area has a separate closure order that for now expires 10/15/17 but will likely be extended.

The "Updated Eagle Creek Fire Closure Area Map" on the Inciweb maps page shows the combined area that's been closed by the USFS, but even that map isn't complete because it doesn't show the Oregon State Park lands that have been closed, like Shepperd's Dell State Park (which contains most of the Angel's Rest Trail).

Aha! I knew I saw this post somewhere... I put this up in the Damage thread since I couldn't find it earlier... but the gorge is definitely still shut down..

There are people (rangers, FS employees, others?) at several closed exits on 84 who have the job of keeping people out of the closed areas. They are supplied with porta potties, so I'm guessing they are there for a while. There's even a ranger waiting at the PCT in CL.
The news is reporting that Starvation Creek State Park has reopened, but I'm guessing that does not include the trails or at least not very far onto the trails.

funny that they have to station officials there to keep people out

that would be a boring job. Better bring some good books.

of course it will be more expensive to rescue unrestrained people who wander into the wilderness, so better to station officials at the trailhead

sort of like zombie movies

SAR is rarely about expense, nearly all ground assets are unpaid volunteer.. The problem is the hazards in the burned area. My personal safety hierarchy would go 1: myself 2: my team 3: everyone else 4: the subject. This isn't some 80's action movie, they're no-go's for a reason.
