Overview

This is a trail work party to apply skills and review curriculum of Trails 102 / 200 coursework. In response to the Eagle Creek Fire, we have come together as part of the Gorge Trails Recovery Team to offer training and classes to new volunteers. The Gorge Trails Recovery Team is made up of volunteers from Trailkeepers of Oregon, Pacific Crest Trails Association, Washington Trails Association, and Friends of the Gorge.

Trail Work 102 – Tread & Drainage. The effects of water and gravity constantly threaten our trails, thus we must learn how best to deflect them. This course begins with the basics of hillside hydrology and how trails work when they shed water properly. Includes introduction of “trail eyes” for recognizing tread erosion patterns. Hands-on practice removing slough and berm, and effective design and maintenance of drain dips.

Trails 200 – Basic Trail Design: For curious trail workers who want to understand why so many trails are in bad shape because of how they were made. Learn how better design and layout makes trails more sustainable and less prone to erosion. Introduction to different trail design standards appropriate for different kinds of trails. This class is for anybody interested in these topics, but students with some trail building and maintenance experience will benefit the most

Project description

We will take time to review trail terminology and how trail design affects trail maintainability. We will be looking at some basics of trail design along sections of trail and apply concepts to trail maintenance and a small trail re-alignment.

A great combination of trail design and maintenance techniques will be explored and plenty of work will be accomplished.
