Two historic achievements of athletic endurance took place on the weekend of June 9th, 2017. First, Christof Teuscher set the Fastest Known Time for 9 laps on Dog Mountain, on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge. Yeah, you read that right, 9 laps. Then, totally out of coincidence, Scott Martin went after the 24-hour record for laps on the same weekend, knocking out 10 laps in under 24 hours.
Dog Mountain has three different paths to the top, all starting off of Highway 14 just west of White Salmon. Each route has different mileage to the top, but you have to climb about 2,800 feet regardless of the route chosen.
Christof’s choices led him to completing 9 laps in 52.2 miles with 25,200 feet of climbing in 16:24:30. Scott chose a different path, resulting in 70 miles with 28,000 feet of climbing in 23:08:49.
