Long time visitor to site joining in, giving back

Post by huckleberries » August 2nd, 2018, 8:23 pm

Hello all!

I've often visited this wonderful site to get ideas or see what recent conditions are like. Thanks to the maintainers who keep it going in this internet that has become less of a beautiful library of knowledge than it started out as.

I love hiking, and the mountains, and huckleberries. Really into maps, such that I spent a lot of years making them the hardest way (relative to today's map-generating technologies). When I saw what you could do with virtual reality panoramic photography in nature, I started shooting in my spare time and haven't stopped after thousands of 360's, many of shot using film. Nature & mountains inspired me to create thousands of abstract landscape artworks using digital painting tools. Cascadia is such an amazing territory to explore, enough for several lifetimes.

So I'm planning on giving back by posting some trip reports, sharing panoramas, etc.

Some paintings viewable at http://www.artofgeography.com/
Will be posting nature panoramas at https://www.vrlog.com
Maps are offline for awhile, but see FPC Forest Park map (https://www.forestparkconservancy.org/store/), One City's Wilderness book maps by Marcy Houle (third edition), or Walk There! (just the maps, a joint effort with Matthew Hampton)

Welcome, huckleberries! You certainly have a different way of looking at nature!

Looking forward to more panoramas. Re. the one you posted - one of my favorite areas. If you haven't been there in October... the fall color is incredible. Also, there's a bear den there. If you visit the area in spring (snowshoes or skis) their tracks will lead you to it. I've seen three different bear there on one occasion - two of your fellow huckleberry lovers are shown below in the general vicinity.
