Bobcat? Tree poachers

Post by beag » July 23rd, 2017, 5:57 pm

Hiked up Duncan Creek to Rail Car Falls Thursday. A short distance to the East we saw what looked like a Bobcat but it had a longer tail. Any idea of what it could have been. Then on the way back on Cedar Swamps Road we heard a chainsaw and then saw a beautiful tree being felled. Then we saw a lean athletic type run out of the brush and throw large chainsaw into back of truck. His buddy was in the truck and they took off real fast. Tree was 50 inches in Diam and over 100 feet. We got back to our cars and on the way out truck was parked at bridge with a few other cars. There were at least 3 tents in the area next to river which is on private property. One lady took pics of truck and a bit later called County police. I guess police responded a bit later but when they got there all the campers had vanished and Sheriff reported that camp area was all cleaned up.
Where tree fell it will take special equipment to haul it to road. Not sure if tree was on Public or Private property. I'll take a few more trips up there to see what happens to tree.

If it was quite a long tail but the cat was spotty, it could have been a young cougar. They can have spots up to two years old. Possibly mom was nearby . . .

Funny that poachers would cut down a big tree that would be difficult to get out. Maybe just for the heck of it. Vandals to boot . . .
