Catherine Creek to Chamberlain Lake

Post by Chip Down » November 20th, 2016, 7:01 pm

The main goal 11/19 was this neat pulpit viewpoint hanging over the Columbia, just west of Chamberlain Lake (which is a few miles east of Catherine Creek).

As seen from above.

Access was via a short steep slope on the left (look for my little yellow x).

The nub at the tip of the pulpit.

The top of the nub, with Rowena Crest (I think) back there.

Knew it would be impossible to pass below the pulpit, but wanted to see how far I could go.

A few other points of interest along the way.

It was raining (barely).

Traversing this spine was fun.

Lots of carnage in this gully. Hard to believe it was all natural.

Interesting engineering choice: They blasted a tunnel through the rock instead of putting a culvert under the tracks.

How was that? Seen it around, some of their other stuff is good. $10 for a non barrel aged imperial stout seems high...

A bit over-roasted for my palate. I'm told 3M tends to be that way.
And slightly smokey, but not in a good way. It was like the malt was smoked over an industrial fire or something. It wasn't awful, but I can't recommend it.
Just remembered I had an actual smoked porter from them that was pretty good, so it's funny that this non-smoked stout was funky-smokey.

Excellent question. Yes, when you get that far east in the gorge you do run into more property issues. On the south side of Hwy 14 I ran into just one area where property lines turned me back. On the north side of the highway there was a mishmash of old unmaintained and unsigned barbed-wire fences, and a very old stone wall that probably doesn't represent a current property line. I encountered just one fence that seemed to be a real barrier (not signed, but maintained and seemed like the property owner meant it). There were a couple houses north of the highway that I avoided because I don't feel comfortable walking close to somebody's residence.

Overall, between Catherine Creek and Chamberlain Lake, the only real impediment is the residential development south of the highway, in the middle of the pic below.

And of course there's the railroad, but most hikers don't feel too guilty about crossing a RR.
