Salmon Mountain 8-1-23
... deep as ever, but the surface improved once we started the route around Tumala Mountain. Once up on the ridgeline, we could see that, during the 2020 Riverside Fire - which ...

Re: FR 4614 gun city
LakeOHiker, glad to hear it. It's a lovely hike, I just don't think I'll return for a minute after jogging down from Mt. Tumala and having to time my crossing because someone is shooting down a road I have to cross. justpeachy, ...

Re: FR 4614 gun city
Five of us hiked the Fanton Trail to Tumala Mtn today 6/25/2020. We didn't hear any shooting at all and there was no trash at the middle trailhead. The trail did have a few trees down but they were maneuverable. The rhodies were just starting ...

FR 4614 gun city
Did Fanton to Tumala a couple weekends ago and folks were target shooting across one of the gravel roads trail #505 crosses. Exceptionally stressful. DIsturbing debris along the trail too. Is it just me or does FR 4614 seems to have a cursed vibe?

Re: Trouble on Tumala Mt.
I hear gunfire EVERY time I hike in the Clackamas Ranger District. I won't hike there alone anymore.slopvehicle wrote: ↑September 19th, 2018, 4:09 pmHeard a lot of gunfire in the disatance, sorta frightening to think we could have been in someone's line of fire on the trail.

Re: Trouble on Tumala Mt.
Just ran into this post randomly... I was up there on Sunday 7/15 for the first time and found the summit exactly as OP described. Bummer to hear that it was in worse shape than usual. Heard a lot of gunfire in the disatance, sorta frightening to think we could have been in someone's line of fire on...

Re: Trouble on Tumala Mt.
... I don't know anything about radio technology but I imagine there are many places where you wouldn't be able to reach the next nearest repeater if Tumala was disabled. In general, it seems like the Forest Service is really reluctant to close/gate roads and when they DO close roads they often don't ...

Re: Trouble on Tumala Mt.
I didn't think the road had been closed, just in such poor shape it was almost impossible to navigate. I know when they put that new "radio repeater" (or whatever it is) up at the summit several years ago (10?), they improved the road - I'm assuming to get the new gear to the top. It only takes one ...

Re: Trouble on Tumala Mt.
I also drove the access road 2-3 years ago, and probably would've made it to the top if it weren't for an inextricable small mountain of gravel (perhaps to allow only the most privileged and lifted trucks access to the summit) in the middle of the road not far from the top. I contacted ...

Re: Trouble on Tumala Mt.
When was the lookout road supposedly closed? I'll take that back then. I thought saw it gated a few years ago just driving by, somehow got the impression it was permanent, and it just fixed in my mind . . . The damage in the area is sporadic it seems, so 99% of the ATVers are staying where they're ...
