Re: Around Glacier Peak (July 27 - Aug. 3), 1: The Southern Half
Thanks a million! Great gift, helping me revisit all my memories of those places. I have a few tips for others interested in this loop. I'll do the current ones first, then a report of how the trails compared in 1980 when I circumambulated GP. Thank you for the lovely set of replies! I really wish ...

Around Glacier Peak (July 27 - Aug. 3), 2: The Northern Half
This is the second of two entries about a loop I did (all the way!) around Glacier Peak this past summer. For detailed route information, see my first post ( here ). The first post covered the southern half of the route, from the Chiwawa River to the Napeequa, from the Napeequa to the White River an...

Re: Around Glacier Peak (July 27 - Aug. 3), 1: The Southern Half
Thanks so much, everyone! The second half should be coming later today :) All that bushwhacking is well beyond me, but I might look into the trail to visit from the pass. Little Giant Pass from the Chiwawa River is doable even just as a dayhike: WTA has it as 10 miles with around 4000' EG , which se...

Around Glacier Peak (July 27 - Aug. 3), 1: The Southern Half
So this’ll be a long one. For the last few years, I’ve been dreaming about this loop around Glacier Peak that Spring and Manning describe in one of their old Mountaineers guides—like the Wonderland around Rainier, but a little longer and considerably more remote. The route pieces together bits of ot...

Gladd Ridge – Barrett Spur Loop (Nov. 16, 2019)
So I seem to do this one every fall, just before the snow comes for good: a quick but nicely varied lollipop loop up from Top Spur to McNeil Point, over to Gladd Ridge (the lateral moraine between the Glisan and Ladd Glaciers), up Gladd Ridge to wherever it’s easy to jump off (usually around 7000’),...

Re: Olympic National Park Aug 11-15, 2019
Cool to see your route around the Humptulips! I've been sort of curious about the southwest end of the Park since enjoying the Six Ridge a few years ago - seems like a lot of nice, uncrowded loop possibilities around there.

Re: Olympic Coast: Third Beach to Toleak and Back (Feb. 9-10)
How weird is that, I was there Feb 8 to 12. Right at Strawberry Point for 4 nights. I think we saw you - both on the way out and the way back! If memory serves, we passed you around 5 PM on the 9th. I think you were having a small fire or something? Then, on the 10th, we waited out the tide playing...

Olympic Coast: Third Beach to Toleak and Back (Feb. 9-10)
GiantsGraveyard.jpg Opening picture: sunset on Giant's Graveyard I came out of TR Retirement a bit ago for a quick (and, in retrospect, kinda preachy) report about my annual birthday hike , and I figured it might be fun, at this time when we’re all largely stuck inside, to write some more, more-or-...
