Re: Sub/Alpine meadows, fires, & climate change

Rush Creek is unique because it lacks an aquafer. It flows when Lemei Lake and Clear Lake reach their fill of water and spill down the hillside. When the lakes drop back below their bowls, Rush Creek stops flowing. It's not "drought" it's just an issue of the cup runneth over. Think about your hike ...

Re: Sad news in the Columbia Gorge

It is sad when someone dies on the trail. In this article, I'm trying to picture an 80-foot drop one mile from the freeway on the PCT and I'm thinking Eagle Creek Trail at the cables downstream from the former Metlako Falls viewpoint. Neither Herman creek nor Benson Plateau via Dry Creek fit the top...

Re: Goat Rocks Wilderness - Oct 17-18

Never get tired of seeing the Goat Rocks pictures. It's been a while since I made the drive up there, so thanks for the post. Interesting to see Goat Lake without any snow - July and August was too early in the season to see so much bare ground. Sometimes I'd look down on the lake and just see a pud...

Re: Nesmith Point trail open and other gorge stuff (Oct 20, 2022)

I'm surprised Nesmith Point is open. I thought its closure was permanent due to the slides at the top of the slope where the spring has compromised the ground's stability. I didn't see any mention of Elowah Falls and Upper McCord Falls which had closed due to a rockslide (as a I recall). Yes, there ...

Re: looking for Cripple Creek #703 10/8 and 10/15

The title of this blog reminds me of a hike I did back in the early 90s with a Mazama hike leader who had done his hiking in the decades before that. His goal was to have hike the Cripple Creek trail up to Cache Meadows, but he didn't follow the current day's trail, but the original route. We of cou...

Two of my favorite hikes: #7 Maple Pass Loop and #29 Cutthroat Pass via Rainy Lake. Never been thair in the fall, the pictures look nice with all that color.

Re: Sub/Alpine meadows, fires, & climate change

Climate change is indeed real, the problem with the discussion of the past generation is that is based on bad science. Let me again say climate change is real. The problem with the science is that the tracking of the climate began with the industrial revolution and scientists noted that the earth wa...

Re: Ladybug swarm on Cooper Spur

They are mating. They will gather at high points so that they mate with the insects on the other side of the ridgeline to enrich the gene pool with the traits of multiple colonies instead of keeping with their own (in-breeding). It is rather interesting when you get to the top of ridge and find the ...

Re: Stop the Beehive Timber Sale! Save the Siouxon Ancient Forest

Can't call it an ancient forest if it burned down a mere century ago. Your 2nd picture does show a logged area with a replanting on the right side, so it is a candidate for logging. I do think your pictures are quite nice and I have liked the Siouxon Creek area for hiking in prior decades (the damag...

Re: Elowah Falls & Upper McCord Creek 2022-10-3

I thought it was closed, too. I see cars there every time I pass on the freeway and wonder which closed trail they are hiking, but then wonder if that's where you park if you don't have a pass for the old highway. :)
