Re: Badger Lake Fire
Saturday was the first day of rifle season. That puts a bunch of extra knuckleheads out there; its like a holiday weekend.

Re: More pics from our back yard Stealth Cam....
I just pulled my cam friday out of the coast range and had both bear and bobcat. I had set for video, so I'm not sure if i can load the video on here. Haven't gotten any cougar pics since last year. Archery season for elk and deer starts 8/28 meaning there will be mess of people in the woods for the...

Re: Coast Range Game Trails
Went back out to the coast range to see what was captured by the camera. I was expecting plenty of elk and deer, which I got, but there were also a couple of surprises. This year is looking to be the year the of the bear.

Re: Is Self Protection Really Necessary on the Trail?
The last time I remember a hiker being attacked was at the trailhead by 2 people. Think it was a few years ago around larch mountain. Personally, aside from archery season I am never armed, and that is if you want to call a bow personal protection. I always have a knife, but that is a tool; definate...

Re: Solitude and a Bear sighting on Cedar Mountain
Bears have a bad and undeserved reputation. Now dont get me wrong, different species of bear have different attitudes. Where i will simply give a black bear a few minutes to wander away, a grizzly requires more respect. Luckily, you wont see a grizzly in oregon. Now, if this drought keeeps up even t...

Re: Safety Check-in
I was given one of those SPOT locators 10 years ago, and other than looking at it, never opened the box again. It seems like overkill to me for most Oregon hikes. A good topo wall map with a few pins to mark my area is what i usually leave behind. A good pocket map, compass, and the knowledge of how...

Re: Coast Range Game Trails
Kilchis river area of Tillamook forest. Dropped off a trail cam during the hike. Hopefully, it will be full of pictures when I retrieve it in a few weeks.

Coast Range Game Trails
Since it was supposed in the triple digits everywhere from the valley east, it seemed best to wander the coast range last weekend. There aren't many hiking trails in the coast range, and really none where I was, so it isn't for everyone. I came across a hidden valley where it didn't get above 80 deg...

Re: Whats This? A Baby Bear Maybe?
There isnt anything out there that color other than black bear, unless you or neighbors have a black dog. I would put money on bear. Make a fruit cocktail, age it in a bucket for 2 weeks in the sun and then dump it by the cam. If you have bear around they will be licking it up in a day or two.

hello to all
I finally came to a place where I was able to take what I am calling a "sabbatical" from work; 6-12 months of doing little more than roaming the wilderness. My hiking style is totally dependent upon the quest. If I were hiking something like the North Umpqua, chances are I would be fly fishing most ...
