Re: Snowshoeing from Timberline Ldg to WhiteRiver Snopark

Take the pct from the climbers lot downhill in the direction of white river. If there's no snow, you could easily continue east downhill on the 600 trail (aka round the mtn trail) to white river and then follow the river to the snow park. But you'll have lots of snow and that downhill section of tra...

Re: Timberline Trail Backpacking Itinerary and Questions

It sounds like a well researched and reasonable itinerary. The only wildcard is the water, either too much or not enough. By late August, most snow will be melted on average but that's not easily predictable now. You will probably want to re-research possible water sources right before your trip. Yo...

Re: WA FR 9341 and the Dark Divide (Snagtooth Creek)

I have a new update on this road: Road 9341 appears to be closed again due to a new slide. How do I know this? A very nice lady from the Mt Adams ranger station called me UNPROMPTED yesterday to alert me to the new road closure. I assume this slide is related to the "overwash" I was told about last ...

Re: Timberline Trail - Next week 10/31

Mt hood has a few ski area webcams that can give useful insight into snow coverage (skibowl, timberline, and meadows). Its helpful to know how to extrapolate to unseen areas by having been to them before. If it was me, I'd be more concerned about the rain and wind. A cold rain is miserable and doesn...

WA FR 9341 and the Dark Divide (Snagtooth Creek)

Exploring the Dark Divide from the Snagtooth Creek trailhead had been my project for a few years until forest road 9341 was finally completely blocked sometime before my last visit in 2019. There was a massive tree lying right down the middle of the road near its' intersection with road 93. That blo...

Re: East Crater and loop

I used to reliably find good paths to East Crater on the north side. The fire changed all that. A couple of recent casual tries always took me to a wall of brush at which point I accept failure. Conditions quickly evolve from year to year. I've noticed those various east side approaches but never tr...

Re: IP Road requires Discover Pass?

what if you just ignore it, will they take any legal action? I say no. I've literally never paid a parking ticket in my life. I have several Wa parking tickets from hiking. Surprisingly, the only Wa ticket that made "noise" in my life was one I got about 15 years ago at Beacon Rock. Only last year ...

Cooper Spur flying spiders (10-4-23)

I did the straightforward Cooper Spur hike on Wed Oct 4. It was a breezy/windy sunny day. On this day, many spiders were riding their lines with the wind. When the light was right, I could usually see the lines. There were large numbers of spider lines draped across the ground and rocks just about e...

From hiking and fishing to kayaking and rafting, the park has something for everyone
Untrue. There is just picnicking and hiking.

Re: PSA: Sunrise Peak Trailhead inaccessible

I understand your frustration. I consider USFS web pronouncements to be old and require other supporting evidence to be believed. Our taxpayer dollars at work. Sometimes AllTrails, WTA and maybe others usually have enough recent trip comments that might provide useful info that the USFS fails to sha...
