Boat shoes have soles that are like a siped tire, no tread, just fine cuts. I never had them so I don't know how they work.

I called the ranger last week about the road to Elk lake. He said that the road was still snowed in but the fire closure has past. The east side was open to the trail heads.

It's been a few years but I made the bushwhack from Crown Lake to Bear point. It wasn't too brushy and only one yellow jacket nest. Didn't get down to the lake, though it has been on my list along with the other lakes on that side.

I agree, don't take the dog. I did once and her feet were in shreds the first day and she was a farm dog out all the time. It must take a lot of conditioning to work up to days of travel in the woods for a dog.
