Re: Mt. Venus, Mt. Margaret back county, Sept. 22, 2023

Don - Great that you got up there, I revisited Mt Venus with Andrea in 2022. We met the crowd the game camera is meant for at the meadow. IMG_1711.JPG The upper ridge is really a pleasure. IMG_1739.JPG Obviously, you can enjoy the views from Point 5207' on the way back, and see how far it is to your...

Re: Cooper Spur 2021/11/13

Great timing! I wimped out and hiked Silver Falls Saturday, as the forecast warned of wind on Mt Hood. If I had not been sandblasted in Mt Margaret Backcountry two weeks ago, I would have ignored the projected wind speeds... Preparation for hikes is sometimes overrated!

bump for Timothy :D

edit: I guess it's selfish to bump a topic for personal reasons, but damn, there have been months where it feels like nobody's reading the offtrail forum anyway.
Thank you for the bump - I really enjoyed the read!

Re: Blue Lake Ridge, August 19th, 2021

It was great to be out with Don again, nothing has changed, he still crosses on a log while I carefully use the provided bridge (see photo immediately above)! It was a surprisingly varied and pleasant hike that can be warmly recommended. Immediately after this hike, I drove to the North Cascades whe...

Re: Cirque of the Towers Loop

It looks like old age won over altitude! The great news is that the oldest person to have summited Mt Everest was 80 years old, so you still have plenty of time to have lots of fun outdoors! Great TR!

Re: Another adventure in the Dark Divide, Peak 5580

Great adventure! We thought of you Friday and almost cancelled our Mt Minnie ascent. The idea was that the Don and Kelly reaction to us bagging Peak 4900 would be worth it! If ambitious, we could also have tagged Peak 5015...

Re: Visiting this summer, looking for suggestions

A Cheryl says, it depends on exactly when you come and the local conditions. Snow can be a real problem at 5-6,000' in July, depending on the year. Some hikes that come to my mind as outstanding are: Coast: Salishan Spit (seals!) or Cascade Head [note that the coast is always cool - I have hiked the...

Re: Newbie... New to it all and in need direction

Hey BrYan! Hiking is much simpler than driving a car in Portland, so don't overthink it! I would suggest going to your local library and getting Bill Sullivan's 100 Hikes in NW Oregon (assuming you live in Portland, otherwise get the guide for your portion or Oregon). While you are there, you can gr...
