Re: PCT thru hikers and Wilderness permits

When you apply to get a PCTA long distance permit, you put in your anticipated start and end points of your hike. This could be Campo to Manning Park, or it could be Etna, CA to Cascade Locks, for example. Purely speculation, but if Mt Hood National Forest was interested, I think they could get an e...

Tire Mountain Trail via Alpine Trail

After being a fair-weathered hiker all spring (as in, having not gone out much at all due to the rain), I decided that I just had to get out and go see something this weekend. If the weather wasn't going to cooperate with views, at least I could hopefully get a glimpse of some beautiful flowers. And...

Re: Trestle Creek Loop Hike closed

Hiked this trail today and it is once again passable as a loop! Not sure when the work was completed. There are reports on AllTrails to corroborate this as well.

Re: Old Maid Flat/Ramona Falls bridge closing 12/1/21

I swear I read something about the closure being for wildlife. The best information I can find is from this facebook post from the forest in 2019: https://www.facebook.com/mthoodnf/photos/alert-%EF%B8%8Fannual-winter-road-closures-will-begin-in-a-few-weeks-recreation-managers/2462033560752096/ ALERT...

Re: Silver Star South Ridge Lollipop - Jan 23 2021

What "cross" are you all talking about? When was the last time you were here and saw it? I've been hiking in this area for 8 years and never even heard of a "Cross" I've only noticed reports in the last couple of years of a cross that seems to be in a cycle of showing up and disappearing. I saw it ...

Re: Wilderness permit boxes on Larch Mtn

The boxes went up this season, within the last two months. The only one I've seen in person is the one on Herman Creek, and I don't think they got to stocking them with permits this year. I love this angle of Hood, which you captured so beautifully! Though, I find myself loving your photo of the fall colors with the generic Cascades the most. Thank you for sharing!

Re: Vine Maple

I support this post. I was more impressed by the foliage on our drive to the trailhead on FR 24 than on the hike itself.

If you're on facebook, a couple of groups to post in (if you haven't already) are PortlandHikers, Oregon Hikers and Climbers, and Washington Hikers and Climbers.

Re: Closed hikes in Field Guide

Ape Cave has been open with a timed-reservation system this past year: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/giffordpinchot/recarea/?recid=40393 It's hard to tell if Abiqua Falls is still closed or not, lots of reports on AllTrails, but I know those aren't always from upstanding citizens. It is wild/sad t...
