Sturgeon Lake Narrows

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Clustered wild rose (Rosa pisocarpa), Oak island (bobcat)

Description

The Narrows, at the top end of the Oak Island Loop Hike, is a channel that connects Sturgeon Lake with its West Arm. A small floodgate on The Narrows keeps the West Arm siltier than the much more expansive eastern bays of Sturgeon Lake.

Because of all the diking and floodgates, the wetlands on Sauvie Island are no longer a refuge for sturgeon. Instead, they have become preferred habitat for introduced carp, which thrive bottom feeding in the muddy shallows.
