Phantom Ship

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

The Phantom Ship and Garfield Peak from Kerr Notch (Phantom Ship Overlook) (bobcat)

Description

The Phantom Ship is an island in Crater Lake, located below the Dutton Cliffs. It is composed of weathered andesite pinnacles about 400,000 years old and up to 170 feet above the lake surface. The formation is probably the remains of a filled fissure which became exposed with the caldera collapse of Mount Mazama 7,700 years ago. The andesite here is the oldest rock that can be seen at Crater Lake.

There are only a few trees on the island, but they include nine species of conifers! The boat tours from Cleetwood Cove approach the Phantom Ship. It can also be seen from various viewpoints on the rim, including Garfield Peak.
