Description
This monument at a trail junction in the Mount Pisgah Arboretum memorializes David Douglas, the young Scottish botanist who traveled through the Willamette Valley in 1826. This expedition, sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society, was Douglas' second botanical expedition to North America and is considered one of the greatest botanical expeditions of all time. Douglas brought back to Great Britain for cultivation such notable species as Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, noble fir, sugar pine, California poppy, salal, Oregon grape, and red flowering currant.
