Center Road-Steamboat Slough Road Junction

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Container ship on the Columbia near the junction (bobcat)
Cattle along Center Road near the junction (bobcat)

Description

The gravel Center Road on the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer meets paved Steamboat Slough Road on a levee with a view to Price Island. The shipping channel passes close to shore here.

You may return along Center Road (open June - September only) if you wish. However, it is recommended that you make a loop going left along Steamboat Slough Road, which is little traveled and offers further wildlife viewing opportunities. Soon you will walk through the section of Steamboat Slough Road that is closed to traffic because of subsidence. After that, the road borders quiet Elochoman Slough and leads back to the refuge headquarters.
