Regulations, facilities

  • Open May 1st to October 31st
  • Day-use open 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Picnic area, information kiosk, interpretive signs, campground
  • Keep dogs on leash

Driving Directions

From John Day:

From the intersection of Highway 26 and Highway 395 in John Day (Main Street and S. Canyon Boulevard respectively), drive east on Highway 26 for 12.8 miles to Prairie City.

From the center of Prairie City, continue east on Highway 26 for 15.6 miles, and turn left onto Highway 7 for Sumpter and Baker City.

After 1.1 miles, go left onto Middle Fork Lane for Bates State Park.

In 0.5 miles, make a left for Bates State Park.

Drive 0.2 miles to park in the day-use area near the covered picnic shelter.
